A lightsaber was a weapon that consists of a metallic cylinder which emits a beam of energy capable of cutting through almost anything. The lightsaber was the weapon of choice for most Jedi and Sith. Due to the weapon's unique balance, having all the weight in the hilt, almost without exception Force-users were the only ones able to wield these weapons because of their connection to the Force, although in some rare cases, they could be wielded by non-Force-Users. One example of these was General Grievous.
