"Torpedoes away."

The Mobile Proton Torpedo Launcher-2a, often abbreviated to MPTL-2a, is a Rebel Alliance artillery unit that appears in the Star Wars: Empire at War and its expansion Forces of Corruption. A unit of two artillery and two Seeker droids can be constructed at the Rebel Heavy Factory for 1100 credits from Tier 2 onwards.

The MPTL-2a possesses particularly large health, capable of surviving a direct hit from Thermal Detonator with a quarter of its health bar left. It can be upgraded to possess even more health, alongside with T-4Bs. The movement sped upgrade is far more important, however, as they're one of the slowest units in the game. The seeker drones that accompany them cannot attack and have low health, but each possesses the sensor ping ability that lets you reveal the fog of war from a target location on the map. This ability is very important, unless you have captured the Abandoned Sensor Relay, and the drones don't have to be anywhere near the artillery for it to work. As such, it is usually best to send the drones back to your base, where they're safest.

Like its Imperial counterpart, SPMA-T, MPTL-2a can only attack when stationary. Its primary (and only) attack fires a salvo of 9 proton torpedoes that do huge long-range damage in a large area. One such salvo will instantly wipe out infantry and TIE Maulers and severely damage other vehicles and buildings. Due to their long range, they're also able to dispatch any turrets from afar. They're also quite good against AT-ATs, since the latter's large size ensures that it will take full damage from the volley. Also, since the torpedoes aren't energy, they will bypass the shielding on 2-M Repulsor Tanks and the unupgraded Shield Generators.

However, the MPTL-2a cannot attack targets at close range, because of its AoE. In case enemy units will make it there, it has no choice but to take several seconds to undeploy and then try to relocate far enough to be able to fire. While it is capable of running infantry over with its treads, it effectively finished against vehicles, since they can simply dog it while draining away its health. The high-level AI will try to avoid this problem by placing them apart from each other so that they will be able to provide covering fire for each other. While you can also do that, it is even better to support them with T2-B Repulsor Tanks, as the latter possess good speed and shielding and will easily dispatch the targets previously weakened by the torpedo salvos.

The MPTL-2a makes a particularly good target for the Palpatine's Force Corrupt. The artillery unit outmatches the SPMA-Ts in terms of damage, and since it has a lot of health, it will last for a long time before succumbing to the health penalty from the corruption.
