Plot[]

Renegade Squadron focuses on a group of Rebel operatives, known as the renegade squadron. Organized by Han Solo and founded by Col Serra, these operatives were used to accomplish covert missions for the Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. The story line appears to be in direct contrast with that of Star Wars: Battlefront II, which revolved around the Imperial 501st Legion. The plot is segmented into eleven battles as the game's campaign mode.

The story started with Tionne Solusar enquiring about the renegade squadron on the commlink to Col Serra, he then started to explain what happened.

Han Solo asked Col Serra to find people who hated the Empire, people such as smugglers. Col Serra then offered them "anything it took" to recruit them to the renegade squadron. The first mission they had was to delay the Imperial advance on Yavin 4. After stopping Imperial scouts from escaping with stolen data, destroying many computer consoles and delaying the Imperial assault, the renegade squadron abandoned Yavin 4.

After the loss of Yavin 4, the rebellion needed a new base, Han Solo informed Col Serra about a holocron containing information on a number of other planets that would work as the new rebel base. The holocron was on Alderaan when the planet was destroyed by the Death Star however it was made from the strongest metal in the galaxy and survived. The renegade squadron then had to fight the Empire, and Boba Fett in a race to get the holocron. After collecting the holocron the renegade squadron had to destroy the imperial gravity well generator to escape.

The squadron transmitted the holocron to Ackbar and then met with Solo on Ord Mantell for repairs. After a short while IG-88 arrived on the junkyard planet along with some more stormtroopers. After defending Chewbacca as he searched for parts for the Millenium Falcon, and disabling the imperial anti-aircraft turrets the renegade squadron fled the planet.

In space near Ord Mantell, the squadron learnt that Ackbar had been captured by the empire. He was held in a Star Destroyer en route to the Kessel spice mine prisons. The renegade squadron went to the space around Kessel to intercept the Star Destroyer and rescue Ackbar.

Ackbar and a few members of the renegade squadron went to Saleucami to see if it was suitable for a rebel base however Boba Fett captured them before they reached the planet. He handed Ackbar to the empire and sold the others as slaves. The renegade squadron went to Tatooine in the hopes of freeing the prisoners before they were sold.

On Tatooine the squadron walked straight into a trap set by Fett and the empire. After helping a Rodian contact and deactivating a force field the prisoners could be freed by Han Solo however the imperials had brought two AT-STs as support for their men, these were destroyed and then the prisoners were extracted.

Renegade squadron then went to Boz Pity to see if it was suitable for use as a rebel base however Fett had put a tracking device on a droid owned by the squadron. Because of this the renegade squadron had to fight to survive before be extracted. During the course of this Ackbar was found injured and was healed with bacta.

The renegade squadron also played a large part in the Battle of Hoth, they defended the Ion Cannon and delayed the imperial assault, despite Darth Vader's presence the squadron still succeded and managed to help the rebellion in the space escape as well.

The renegade squadron's next mission was to get some data about the imperial base on Endor. The Emperor himself had this information and he brought it with him to Korriban where the squadron trapped him inside a Sith temple and took his data from his shuttle before escaping.

Although the renegade squadron wanted to help with the attack on Endor they an important mission on Sullust, they had to perform a diversion to draw imperial forces away from Endor. The diversion failed as the empire knew of their plan. The squadron walked into another trap and IG-88 was sent to eliminate the squadron by Vader. The squadron escaped and managed to reach Endor in time to bypass the planatery shield.

On Endor they learnt that Han Solo was surrounded by stormtroopers and they arrived in time to protect him whilst he destroyed the bunker. They then removed the empire from Endor.

The story then ended with Col Serra informing Tionne that the renegade squadron disbanded itself as the new republic came into place. This was because the new republic needed real heroes not hidden forces.

Campaign mode missions[]

Main article: Campaign mode

The missions in Renegade Squadron are fairly simple with the majority of objectives being either capturing command posts, killing particular units or collecting an item to bring back to base. The first mission on Yavin 4 acts as a tutorial as well as the first mission. The missions are centred around clips of the plot.

Renegade Squadron was generally recieved well with an overall average gaming site review of seven out of ten. IGN rated the game 7.9 out of 10, whilst press average gave 7.3 out of ten, and reader reviews reached averages of almost nine. Gamespot gave a review higher then many rival gaming sites with a score of 8 out of 10. The AI is often criticized in reviews however this is understandable due to the PlayStation Portable's limits.
